Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens
Last week we visited the Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens, located in Sanford, FL with our homeschool group. We had picture perfect weather and a really wonderful day! The Central Florida Zoo isn’t as large as other zoos in Florida but offers a surprising number of things for visitors to do and see.
The zoo currently has over 400 animals, and dates back to 1923! The zoo has been at its current location in downtown Sanford since 1975.

Sitting in the butterfly garden
One of our favorite spots in the zoo was the butterfly garden! There were so many beautiful flowers and plants, and little spots to sit to watch the butterflies.

The Central Florida Zoo also has a 2500 sq. foot KABOOM playground and even a great splash park that the kids had a blast on! These are both included in the admission price for the zoo.

Another fun feature of the zoo was the Herpetarium, which houses many different species of reptiles and amphibians. We were amazed at the beautiful markings on many of these creatures and just how up close and personal we felt to them!

Albino Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake
The Central Florida Zoo offers much more than just pretty snakes! We got to see many beautiful and endangered animals like the Amur Leopard, Red Ruffed Lemur and Black Footed Cat.

The Massey Services Insect Zoo was amazing as well! I don’t think I have ever seen so many varieties of insects in one place. The kids also had a blast playing with puppets and even dressing up as insects too.

Let’s not forget about a Florida favorite…the alligators, and crocodiles!

American Alligator
If you are looking for a little more adventure during your visit, you can take a ride on the Zoom Air Zipline adventure course and see the zoo from the tree tops! Or if flying through the trees isn’t your thing, relax and enjoy the Little Florida Railroad train ride.
Don’t forget to visit the gift shop before you leave the zoo, or bring your lunch and enjoy a picnic at one of the many shady places to stop and rest.
The Central Florida Zoo has a lot to offer both children and adults alike! For more information please visit Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens.
