In honor of Dia de Los Muertos, I thought it would be fun to make something special! We originally wanted to make some homemade sugar skulls, but didn’t have all of the needed ingredients on such short notice. Maybe next year! This is a traditional Tres Leches cake and it is so good but warning….it is very rich! If you love rich, decadent desserts, this is the recipe for you. We chose to top this cake with cajeta (caramelized milk) but it really didn’t need it!
Servings: 9 x 13 size cake, about 12 servings
You will need:
1 white cake mix
3 cups half n half
1 small can sweetened condensed milk
1 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream
3/4 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
cajeta (caramelized milk) if desired
1. Prepare white cake mix in a 9 x 13 pan according to instructions. Allow to cool completely. Pierce the top of cake with a fork in several places.
2. Combine the half n half and sweetened condensed milk and pour this over the top of the cooled cake. Cover the cake and refrigerate for several hours or overnight, until most of the milk has soaked into the cake. You can then decide whether to leave any extra milk in the cake or remove it. We decided to just leave the small amount of extra milk in the cake, instead of trying to pour it off.
3. Combine heavy whipping cream, sugar and vanilla in a medium bowl and whip until thick. Spread this over the top of the cake.
4. Top with warm caramelized milk or just enjoy as is!
