Melissa Lummis considers herself a truth seeker, a peaceful warrior, a paranormal and fantasy writer, an avid reader, a thru-hiker GAàME ’98, a wife, a mother, and a free thinker. She believes the universe conspires to help an adventurer. And if we live our lives as if it is a daring adventure (and it is!), then everything we need will find its way to us.
The author lives in rural Virginia with her husband, two children, an Alaskan Malamute and a myriad of forest creatures. The nature of her mind dictates that she write to stay sane. Otherwise, her fertile imagination takes off on tangents of its own accord, creating scenarios and worlds that confuse the space-time continuum. Namaste, dear friends.

like Clive Cussler and Tom Clancy. So I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that I couldn’t help
slipping in some political intrigue into my paranormal romance. I think it adds that extra
something that puts the reader on the edge of her seat, flipping pages while her kids and husband
whimper about maybe getting some dinner?
I hint around that Wolf Arrighi, our hero, and his close friend and mentor, Calisto,
were instrumental in founding the Culper Ring during the American Revolution. The fictitious
organization morphed over the years to become the “black ops” group that protects the United
States of America from supernatural terrorism in Loti and Wolf’s world. As is the case for many
writers, I based my Culper Ring on some very real, historical facts.
However, as is also true with any work of fiction, the real world facts were simply a
jumping off point—the inspiration. Any similarities between the real Culper Spy Ring and
my make-believe Culper Ring are purely coincidental. For example, while my Culper Ring
was created during the American War for Independence by Wolf Arrighi, a Native American
vampire, and Calisto, an ancient Roman vampire who discarded his Roman name for personal
reasons, the real Culper Spy Ring was founded by Benjamin Tallmadge, a young cavalry officer,
and his homies from Setauket, New York.
These Long Islanders came together to form the spy ring at a very critical juncture in the
Revolution. We were locked in a stalemate with the British over control of the Hudson Valley—
whoever controlled the Hudson Valley would win the war. What the Culper Spy Ring proceeded
to accomplish was nothing short of winning the war. And they did it as average citizens going
about their average day. Real, American heroes, folks. Wow.
Take Austin Roe, a humble tavern keeper, who took vital intelligence on British
Navy maneuvers to Manhattan on supply trips for his business. His brave acts provided the
information that prevented the British from ambushing our French allies in Rhode Island and
perhaps ruining our alliance with them.
Then there was the wife of Patriot Judge Selah Strong, Anna Smith Strong, whose
husband had been taken prisoner by the British. She would hang her laundry in certain patterns
to communicate information about secret meetings amongst the spy ring. I don’t doubt her
personal interests motivated her actions, but they helped pave the way for our American way of
life we live today.
And here’s a bit of history I bet you didn’t know: the Culper Spy Ring uncovered
Benedict Arnold and John Andre’s plot to sell control of the fort at West Point to the British.
And I bet you did know that Benedict Arnold and John Andre were caught, tried and hanged for
My Culper Ring is nothing like that. It is made up of oracles, witches, lessor demons,
mahatmas and vampires. And they are no longer trying to win a war for independence. No.
They’re too busy trying to stop evil warlocks and homicidal vampires from gaining control of
the fabric of the universe and, thus, rendering our world into a hell on earth. They’re trying,
