This is quite possibly the easiest homemade bread ever! It does not require yeast and is ready in a very short time! It is my new go-to recipe when we want homemade bread without having to wait all day!
This is a type of Irish soda bread and goes well with soups/stews and is delicious with butter and honey as well. The bread will have a crunchy brown crust over the top.
4 cups all-purpose flour
4 tablespoons white sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup margarine or butter, softened
1 cup buttermilk
1/4 cup margarine or butter, melted
1/4 cup buttermilk
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Lightly grease a large baking sheet.
- In a large bowl, mix together flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, salt and the 1/2 cup margarine or butter. Stir in 1 cup of buttermilk and egg. Knead slightly while dough is still inside the bowl, just until all ingredients are combined. Form dough into a large round and place on prepared baking sheet. In a small bowl, combine the 1/4 cup melted margarine or butter with 1/4 cup buttermilk; brush loaf with this mixture. Use a sharp knife to cut an ‘X’ into the top of the loaf.
- Bake in preheated oven for 45 to 50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean. As the bread bakes, continue to brush on the buttermilk/butter mixture to create that yummy crunchy top!
